Consequences of untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea may or may not be evident to the individual or to others. It may be detected by excessive daytime sleepiness - or noted by a partner who is frequently awakened by snoring, which almost always accompanies Obstructive Sleep Apneoa.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is considered a serious health problem because so many individuals are deprived of sleep due to this condition that their lack of alertness poses a serious hazard. It is also associated with hypertension and heart disease. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea may also cause impaired mental functioning, delayed reaction times, and difficulty maintaining vigilance and concentration. In its severe form it is accompanied by high pressures in the lung arteries which can lead to heart failure. Obstructive Sleep apnoea is a concern and is often contra - indicated with certain medications and general anesthesia.
