Risk Factors for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
- Some studies have shown that a family history of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea increases the risk of OSA
two to four times.
- Being overweight is a risk factor for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, as is having a large neck. However, not all individuals
with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea are overweight.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is more likely to occur in men than in women.
- Abnormalities of the structure of the upper airway contribute to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea may be more common amongst certain ethnic groups (African, Mexican, Aborigines)
- Smoking and alcohol use increase the risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
